Bascinet “wolf-ribs” | Helmet inspired by 14th-century iconography | C45 steel 2 mm | Weight: 2.5 kg

The “Wolf Rib” bascinet is a helmet inspired by one of the most intriguing and rare iconographic depictions of the late 14th century. The form of the visor is based on the helmet shown in the scene “Resurrection” painted by the Master of the Trzebonia Altarpiece, dated to 1378 and created in Prague. The artwork depicts an imagined vision of Jerusalem in 0 A.D., where one of the soldiers is shown wearing a helmet with a distinctive ribbed visor.

It should be emphasized that no original examples of this type of helmet have survived, nor are there any primary material sources confirming its historical use. For this reason, the historical authenticity of the “Wolf Rib” bascinet remains a matter of interpretation, and its form is based primarily on the analysis of this single iconographic source.

Today, helmets of the “Wolf Rib” type are very commonly used in buhurt (HMB) combat due to their excellent visibility and very good ventilation, allowing for comfortable breathing, while still providing a high level of protection for the head and face. This high level of protection is achieved in part thanks to the strongly protruding visor, which creates a safe distance between the face and the impact surface, effectively dispersing the force of blows.

The helmet is made of high-quality, hardened C45 steel with a thickness of 2 mm, ensuring solid protection while maintaining a relatively low overall weight. The helmet weighs 2.5 kg without chainmail. The ribbed visor further contributes to dispersing the energy of strikes from bladed weapons and polearms.

The visor is non-removable and forms an integral part of the construction, in accordance with current HMB safety regulations. The helmet is supplied with a chin strap, providing stable and secure fastening during intense combat.

Each helmet is handmade to individual measurements, with the possibility of customizing the finish, chainmail and additional accessories to perfectly suit the user’s needs.
