The breastplate features a central plate with a forged V-shaped stop rib (also called lisière d’arrêt) designed to deflect weapon points away from the neck. The lower section forms a fauld – protective folds for the abdomen and hips – elongated into a triangular shape, also protecting the lower torso, hips, and groin, and creating an integral connection with the lower protective plates, following the iconography of the San Jacopo davanti a Erode scene from the relief panel of the silver Altare Argenteo di San Jacopo in San Zeno Cathedral, Pistoia. The elongated triangular fauld protects the lower torso, hips, and groin, deflects blows from the center of the body, while allowing leg movement and torso rotation, and visually emphasizes full protection of the knight in the iconography.
Breastplate, Italy 1365-1370 (057)
New Arrivals, Torso ArmorThe breastplate was made based on the iconography of the scene San Jacopo davanti a Erode (Saint James before Herod) from the relief panel cycle depicting Saint James on the silver Altare Argenteo di San Jacopo in the San Zeno Cathedral in Pistoia. The altar was created between 1287 and 1456 by several goldsmiths and artists. The breastplate is specifically based on a scene from the reliefs made in 1365–1370.
